It’s never too late to seek help, regardless of your child’s age or the belief that some kids are just “bad sleepers.” Every child can learn how to sleep well because sleep is a learned skill.

Sleep Training is appropriate for children 6 months to 10 years of age. Please note, typically sleep training is suitable for babies who are already able to roll both ways and have surpassed the 4-5 month sleep regression phase. For newborns, aged 0-5 months, who haven’t started rolling yet, Newborn Sleep Education and Sleep Shaping are recommended. It is important to consult your pediatrician to ensure your child’s growth and development goals and discuss your child’s readiness for learning independent sleep skills before starting any sleep training methods.

Finding the right sleep support involves understanding your needs, coordinating with your partner, and exploring various support options. Please note that one-on-one coaching is going to give you the most customization, accountability, emotional support and faster results. Here’s a brief overview of sleep support options:

  • Sleep Books and Free Guides: Ideal for those preferring to tackle sleep training independently.
  • Digital Programs and Courses: Offers DIY sleep coaching directions via video courses.
  • Group Coaching and Memberships: Provides some personalized advice from a sleep coach.
  • One-on-one Support: The most customized option for your family. The level of support varies from basic email/text support to comprehensive consults with zoom video follow-up calls. (see below for how to research when hiring a coach and great interview questions)

The effectiveness of these methods depends on the coach’s experience, training, and the chosen methodology. Here is a comprehensive article overviewing all the different types of methodologies (click here). Remember, personalized one-on-one coaching can offer quicker, more supportive results in navigating sleep challenges.

The burning question is… How do you know if and when you need one-on-one Sleep Coaching support? The answer is simple: it’s the moment when the weight of middle of night and early wakings, nap-time struggles, and bedtime drama becomes too confusing or too heavy a burden to bear.

Here are some common struggles and signs that you would benefit from expert one-on-one sleep support:

  • Maybe you’ve tried and failed to help your child sleep, and now you’re sleep-deprived and frustrated, all because of bad or no sleep.
  • You’re scouring every book, every website, every podcast — bleary-eyed — hoping you can find the right answers.
  • Your experiencing multiple Night wakings its getting more and more difficult to help your child go back to sleep.
  • Perhaps you’re wrestling with nap challenges, from hard naps and short naps to contact naps that feel like you’re “nap trapped.”
  • Bedtime battles may also be causing you distress, with bedtime feeling too long and hard, struggling to establish a consistent routine, or dealing with a child too exhausted for a bedtime routine.
  • Night feeding confusion. This might be another source of tremendous worry, questioning what’s realistic, how to gently wean night feeds, or dealing with a little one using you as a “human pacifier”.
  • Sleep Regressions. Developmental leaps in the first 20 months of life ALWAYS cause sleep challenges. Other culprits that cause sleep regressions are time changes, illness and travel, moving, and undiagnosed medical conditions..
Tackling early rising: Are you finding yourself stressed about your child’s early rising when they are ready to start their day sometime between 4-6am?
  • Life transitions: from co-sleeping to crib or transitioning from a crib to a toddler bed, along with external changes like daycare, moving, new caregivers, new siblings, or returning to work, may also be affecting your child’s sleep.

How are these thoughts and beliefs and sleep challenges affecting you?

Does this sound familiar?

  • Worried about your child’s growth and development because of lack of sleep.
  • You wonder if only selfish parents do sleep training? You fear sleep training could jeopardize your attachment and connection with your child.
  • Trying to just “get through” each day. You are always tired and foggy, which is not how you want to live.
  • Disagreements and grumpiness. You and your partner are struggling to get on the same page about improving your child’s sleep? Finding yourselves functioning in a day-to-day survival mode just to get through?
  • You tried and failed sleep training so you believe your sleep situation can’t be fixed: You wonder how working with a coach would be any different or better?
  • Relentless self-doubt, guilt and confusion about current sleep situation & how to solve it
  • Dreading & hating bedtime. You are stressed and anxiety-ridden about what the night-time will bring.
  • No Free-Time. Feeling irritated and resentful. Dealing with bad sleep is all you do, there is no time for yourself or your partner. No time to work out or do normal household tasks.
  • Sleep Deprived and living “groundhog day”: Multiple wake ups throughout the night are affecting everyone in the house. No one is getting quality sleep.
  • Is there something wrong with my child? Fear that you are not doing something “right” or missing a medical or behavioral issue that is inhibiting sleep.
  • I can’t concentrate at work with this sleep deprivation: Do you have a demanding job and find it hard to function all day without caffeine due to lack of sleep?
  • My kiddo rejects the babysitter. My kiddo needs me at bedtime and naps. Are you unable to leave your child with a babysitter because it would just be too difficult with your child’s crying jags and inability to be put down? Does this leave you feeling isolated and lonely?
  • “They are only young once”… so you find you are martyring yourself and needlessly enduring night waking and contact naps and bad sleep.
  • I’m so confused on what I need to do: Desperately searching for a clear roadmap for your specific and unique situation to solve sleep challenges with lasting results.

Wow, this is the first time I’m learning about sleep coaching. I have never heard of even such a word but this is something I could personally use.

I have suffered from a sleep disorder for over twenty years and nothing seems to work. Now your post is about children up to ten years old. Is there such training for adults?

I will work a full day, do my house chores but when it comes time to sleep, my brain is wide awake and I feel this is something I should try because over the years I have given up for a solution but this is something affecting my life. On bad days my memory is very poor due to lack of sleep.

Thanks for sharing a really informative post that parents with young children will really appreciate.

Joanna Clark

I am happy you enjoyed learning about building sleep skills for children ages 6 months to 10 years of age. I am happy you are here at sleepcoaching.com to find support. There are many adult sleep coaches available to help you achieve your sleep and health goals.

Anastazja

Initially, I began reading this article because I am having trouble sleeping due to aches that weren’t in my joints previously. However, once I got into the article, I realized that my son and daughter-in-law need help with their toddler.

He takes a long time to go to sleep with a lot of fussing and then wakes up several times at night. This makes the parents exhausted. They have read books, but I don’t think that they have thought about a sleep coach. I am sending them this article in hopes that the information you offer will help them.

Thanks,

Jim

Thanks Jim to referring this article and my services to your son with a toddler. The good news it is never “too late” for a child to learn their sleep skills. Sleep coaching is safe and effective and helps build healthy sleep habits for life!

I didn’t know you could hire a sleep coach! I’ve always thought that it was some rich people’s other whim.

However, considering how some babies fight to sleep at night, it can be exhausting for parents to bear all of this. And this is true especially when they work outside the home during the day. That’s why I fully support the solutions shared in this article. And I appreciate your insights on choosing a sleep coach!

Joanna Clark

Yes! It is good news that finding a good sleep coach can help solve all the sleep disturbances and it does not cost too much money. Besides investing in restorative sleep is the best health investment you can make. As they say, “Sleep is the golden chain of wellbeing and health”

Hey Joanna,

This is an excellent overview of the advantages of enlisting a gentle sleep coach. And I’m interested in learning about the specific approaches that gentle sleep coaches utilize to aid children in forming healthy sleep routines without inducing stress. And how do these techniques stack up against more traditional sleep training methods regarding their effectiveness and long-term results?

Lastly, what factors should parents consider when selecting a gentle sleep coach to ensure they find the right match for their family’s requirements?

Your insights on these inquiries would benefit parents seeking to enhance their children’s sleep.

I look forward to receiving your input.

S.J

Joanna, your article on Gentle Sleep Coaching is incredibly insightful. As a parent who’s faced sleep challenges, I appreciate your compassionate approach. Your emphasis on personalized, gentle methods respecting both child and parent needs is reassuring.

The overview of sleep support options—from books to one-on-one coaching—offers clarity. The science-based and emotionally supportive nature of Gentle Sleep Coaching is compelling. Investing in it isn’t just a quick fix but about long-term healthy sleep habits and family bonds. Your article is a valuable resource, offering practical guidance to parents in need.

Keep up the good work!

Warm regards,

Hi, I think that your website is very thorough and informative about the topic of sleep which is something that is a trouble to many people of all ages from children through adulthood and into old age.

It can be very debilitating because sleep deprivation has a cumulative effect. There are lots of remedies that may suit some people but not others, so it is a matter of finding the right remedy to suit your own or your child’s circumstances.

Alan

LineCowley

Sleep deprivation is one of the worst things that I have ever experienced during the years of my boys being small. So how I wish I had known that it is possible to use the professional services of a sleep coach when my babies were growing up.

My second son was a terrible sleeper, and would on average wake up seven times during the night when he was already a year old. We had tried controlled crying, which was very hard and not effective enough. The doctor eventually referred me to a sleep clinic, where I had to keep record of his waking hours and my reaction. Although it gradually improved, he did not go through the night until he was three years old.

A sleep coach would certainly have been the ideal solution for us. I will be sharing this helpful guide with those that are suffering from kids that are not sleeping.

Hanna

What a comprehensive and insightful post! The detailed breakdown of sleep support options and the benefits of hiring a Certified Gentle Sleep Coach is incredibly helpful for parents navigating sleep challenges. The emphasis on personalized, science-based approaches and the importance of maintaining a strong parent-child bond is reassuring.

I’m particularly interested in the section on handling sleep regressions and life transitions. Could you share more about how a Gentle Sleep Coach helps during significant changes like moving or introducing a new sibling? What specific strategies do they employ to ensure a smooth transition for both the child and the family?

Chris Towers

This post really brought some memories back for me. When my two young girls were newborns, my wife and I had countless sleepless nights dealing with sleep issues.

I wish we had known about gentle sleep coaching back then I can tell you. This approach that you describe sounds very supportive and much kinder than letting them cry it out all the time.

Out of interest, how long does it usually take for families to start seeing improvements once they begin working with a gentle sleep coach?

Thanks for this, and I like your website.

Chris

Katlynn

Where was this information when my children were little? These approaches would have been a game changer. As a nurse, this website is a great resource for my clients with young children as bedtime is usually a big concern.

I remember the sleepless nights and never-ending routines that wouldn’t solve anything. A sleep coach is an excellent recommendation.

Linden Thorp

This is just what I need! Wow, fantastic timing. I’m going out of my mind with exhaustion. My four-month-old will not sleep for more than about 30 minutes, and she cries most of the time she’s awake. I feel so bad because she seems to be in agony! Of course, I’ve had all the medical checks I can possibly find, but no one can solve this problem. You’re my last resort.

Tell me more about Sleep Shaping. Is it better to engage a therapist to teach us how to do this – which will take time to arrange – or is it something I can try myself? I have to do something immediately!! As you can see, I’m desperate and don’t know where to start!  You offer so much information. Is it possible for me to speak on the phone with a sleep therapist as quickly as possible? Please respond to my message as quickly as you can!

Dee J.

I will admit that I have never heard of sleep coaching. This is quite an information-filled article. Precious information.

However, I wish I had known about “Night Feeding Confusion” a few years ago when my daughter was a baby. For nearly a year I was used as a “human pacifier”. This perfectly describes what was going on. I was going out of my mind because I was woken up several times which then made me sleep-deprived for a full day of work the next day.

Luckily, we are out of this phase. But, I would like to ask about grinding teeth in your sleep. I noticed it happening with my teenager a few years ago. It eventually stopped on its own. Now it seems to be happening again and I feel it’s somehow related to exam stress but I am not sure. Do you have any advice on this?

Dee J.

HI Joanna,

What a comprehensive and insightful read! This article is a lifeline for sleep-deprived parents grappling with their child’s sleep issues. Your breakdown of different sleep support options, from books and digital courses to one-on-one coaching, offers a well-rounded guide that caters to various preferences and needs.

Recognizing that sleep training isn’t a one-size-fits-all process and providing tailored approaches based on age and developmental stages is crucial. I appreciate the clear advice on identifying when it might be time to seek professional help, making it less overwhelming for parents to make that decision.

Your conversational and empathetic tone throughout makes this a comforting and motivating read for any parent facing sleep challenges. Kudos for providing such a well-rounded, compassionate, and actionable guide to better sleep for families!

Marita

Why not, if you can afford to hire a sleep coach and you really have tried everything and your child has struggles in his sleeping habits, and of course, your life has been greatly affected by his habits, go ahead and find the best sleep coach out there.

Working with your sleep coach would eventually teach you as a parent on how to handle and care for your kid, so he will gradually develop a good sleeping habit that would calm you and make you a more effective parent.

Good luck!

Marita

Scott

This is the first time I’ve heard of a sleep coach, and I find the idea intriguing. When it comes to babies, I have heard of breastfeeding coaches and behavioral coaches, but sleep coaching is new.

In today’s world, we hear more and more about the importance of sleep and many books have been written, so it makes sense that there would be experts to guide this important sleep training for children. My children and grandchildren are grown now, but I wonder how much we would have benefited from help with sleep!

I will need to share this information with my young friends who are starting their families!

Scott

Leah

The title immediately caught my attention. I myself have a little one who didn’t sleep for his first year. I didn’t know that there were so many different ways of sleep training. It feels so good to read about something that you can easily recognize. Will take all these tips with me further and invest in sleep coaching!

Josh

Hi Joanna,

I’ve found that adopting a gentle approach to sleep training has been incredibly beneficial for my extended family. My cousin and her partner struggled with finding a method that didn’t cause too much stress for their child.

The personalized support from a gentle sleep coach made a world of difference. Not only did his sleep improve, but they also felt more confident and less anxious about the whole process. It’s amazing how much empathy and understanding can contribute to developing healthy sleep habits.

If you’re on the fence, I’d highly recommend giving gentle sleep coaching a try—it truly fosters a more peaceful and supportive environment for both parents and children.

Thanks for the great article.

Ray

I completely agree with the emphasis on personalized sleep coaching. Every child is different, and a one-size-fits-all approach often falls short. Your detailed explanation of the benefits of one-on-one support, especially the gentle sleep coaching method, highlights the importance of considering a child’s emotional needs alongside sleep training.

I’ve been there with the sleepless nights and constant battles over bedtime. When my daughter was struggling with multiple night wakings, I felt like I had tried everything. It wasn’t until we sought help from a certified gentle sleep coach that we saw real, lasting improvements. The personalized approach and consistent support made all the difference, and now she sleeps through the night, and we’re all so much happier and well-rested.

I think hiring a gentle sleep coach is a fantastic investment for any family dealing with sleep issues. The gentle methods are not only effective but also respectful of the child’s emotional well-being, which is so crucial.
