You can still be social, active, and have fun while going through a course of CBT for insomnia!
Some CBT-I techniques are quite regimented — particularly sleep restriction and stimulus control. However, this is exactly why they are so beneficial — they eliminate any confusion and prevent mental gymnastics by giving you a clear roadmap to follow that will help you get your sleep back on track in the shortest time possible.

With this in mind, sometimes I have clients ask me how they can strike a balance between having fun and enjoying life and sticking faithfully to the CBT-I techniques they are learning.
It’s very important to remain as active as possible and to be as social as possible when you have chronic insomnia. The more enjoyable things you do during the day, the less you think (and worry) about sleep and the better your overall quality of life.

So, there’s no need to avoid meeting up with friends if it means you’ll miss the start of your sleep window on one night of the week! As long as things like missing the start of your sleep window or enjoying a romantic breakfast in bed are the exception rather than the rule, they aren’t going to have a negative impact on your progress — but they will improve your quality of life and divert attention away from your insomnia. That’s a good thing.
