Why sleep trackers are a bad idea if you have chronic insomnia

A lot of people use sleep/fitness trackers to gain insight into their sleep. Although these consumer sleep tracking devices can be great at increasing awareness about sleep, they are not helpful if you are living with chronic insomnia.

There is very little clinical data to verify the accuracy of the information provided by consumer sleep tracking devices or the methodology they use. So, not only can closely tracking your sleep increase anxiety and make sleep more difficult, you might be worrying about sleep issues that don’t even exist or are less serious than reported.

Sleep diaries are a far better way of tracking your sleep — especially if you are living with chronic insomnia. They have been validated as being almost as accurate as polysomnography (an overnight sleep laboratory study) and they can provide a far better reflection of your current sleep patterns and help to identify areas where your sleep can be improved.

The most effective long-term treatment for insomnia is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). If you go through a course of CBT-I, you will keep sleep diaries rather than tracking your sleep with a consumer sleep tracking device because sleep diaries provide more accurate data and they have been clinically validated.
