Why keeping a sleep diary when you have insomnia is so helpful and rarely increases worry or anxiety

If you decide to try the best long-term treatment for chronic insomnia, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), you’ll almost certainly be keeping some kind of sleep diary or sleep log.

Many people with insomnia worry that monitoring their sleep by filling out a sleep journal each day will increase sleep-related worry and anxiety — but this is very rarely the case.

In my experience, as long as you are filling out a well-designed sleep diary, there is rarely any increase in worry or anxiety. In fact, my clients tell me that keeping a sleep diary was one of the most beneficial aspects of the sleep coaching program they took with me.

Keeping a daily sleep diary will often reveal that your sleep is perhaps not as bad as you originally thought. It also gives you a “bigger picture” look at your sleep so you don’t focus only on the bad nights. A sleep diary also helps you track your progress as you go through a course of CBT-I, giving you more confidence in the techniques you are learning and your own ability to sleep.
