What do shoe sizes and sleep requirements have in common? (Hint: We are all different)

Many people with chronic insomnia worry about how much sleep they are getting because it is often less than what friends and family members are getting.

Comparing your sleep with that of others is not a helpful exercise because we are all unique and we all have unique sleep requirements.

Do you walk around wearing the same size shoe as a friend or family member or do you wear shoes that are the right size for you? Do you ask friends and family members what size shoe they wear, then worry if it’s different to your own?

I’m guessing not!

In the same way, you shouldn’t compare your sleep with that of anyone else or try to match the sleep pattern of anyone else.

You are unique, and so is your sleep.
