Watch me use my mystical powers to reveal how your sleep issues began and why you now have insomnia
Today, I’m going to look into my crystal ball and tell you all about your insomnia and why you are still struggling with sleep!
First of all, I can see that perhaps you are someone who is a bit more predisposed to sleep issues. Maybe you are someone with a busy life, maybe you are a naturally light sleeper, more reactive to stress, perhaps you are a bit more susceptible to anxiety.

I now see an event — a precipitating factor that triggered your issues with sleep. Maybe it was something like a new job, exam stress, a health scare, a move — something that made sleep a bit more difficult.

I can tell that even after this initial trigger for sleep disruption was no longer an issue and no longer relevant, your sleep issues remained. I can tell that this was because of the thoughts you had about sleep and the behaviors you implemented in an attempt to improve your sleep or compensate for sleep loss.
Every time you feed your insomnia, you make your insomnia more powerful and more demanding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4Iwdk6TTxQ
It looks as though you might have started thinking about sleep more than you ever did before. You started to spend time researching sleep and insomnia and worrying about sleep. You found more and more of your day was spent thinking about sleep.
I think that you might have started to spend more time in bed (going to bed earlier, staying in bed later), maybe you canceled plans and activities, called in sick to work, or otherwise tried to conserve energy or modify your life because of your insomnia.

And all this leads us to where you are today.
As I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, I am not looking into a crystal ball. Rather, my daughter’s snowglobe that I borrowed to use as a prop for this video!
The fact of the matter is that although there are a virtually infinite number of initial triggers of sleep disruption, chronic insomnia occurs because of our response to that sleep disruption.

Four important questions for everyone with chronic insomnia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nheh3_fHFr8
Insomnia follows a predictable path. Many of us are slightly more predisposed to sleep disruption so when that perpetuating event occurs, we are more likely to experience temporary sleep disruption.
However, this short-term sleep disruption becomes a longer-term problem because of the thoughts we have and the behaviors we exhibit in response. It’s these thoughts and behaviors that make it harder for sleep to recover because they can reduce sleep drive, they can disrupt our body clock, and they can activate the arousal system.
The good news is that cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) addresses all these problematic thoughts and behaviors. In other words, CBT-I gets to the root cause of the problem — and that’s why it is such an effective long-term treatment for chronic insomnia.

So, if you recognized your own experience in this video, the good news is that if you implement CBT-I techniques you will almost certainly be able to get your sleep back on track and enjoy better sleep for the rest of your life.
