Wakefulness is actually part of sleep
Many people with chronic insomnia have a lot of concern about being awake — but it’s important to bear in mind that being awake is actually part of sleep!
Think of it this way — a healthy sleeper will get into bed, take some time to drift off to sleep (falling asleep involves being awake), will probably wake a few times during the night for a short periods of time (more wakefulness), and will take some time to emerge from sleep in the morning (some more wakefulness time).
Sleep is not a single, unitary state. It includes wakefulness. Being awake is part of being asleep. Healthy sleepers will typically spend around 85%-95% of the time they spend in bed asleep — the rest is spent awake because wakefulness is part of the sleep process.
So, if you have chronic insomnia, try to bear in mind that sleep includes periods of wakefulness. Try not to be overly concerned about every moment you spend awake since this can actually make sleep more difficult.
If you would like to worry less about sleep and improve your sleep quality, I encourage you to look into cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). CBT-I helps tackle the root cause of insomnia by identifying and helping to fix incorrect and/or inappropriate sleep-related thoughts and behaviors.
