These are the reasons why it is so important to stay active when living with chronic insomnia
Life with chronic insomnia is hard. You go through each day with an ongoing sensation of feeling drained, tired, and fatigued. This can lead to an overwhelming urge to rest, to cancel plans, and to conserve energy in a bid to feel better.
Unfortunately, inactivity does not reduce these feelings of fatigue — it actually tends to make them worse. Furthermore, when we cancel plans because of a bad night of sleep, we are guaranteeing that a night of insomnia will only ever have a bad outcome — and this leads to more sleep-related worry, self-monitoring, and worse sleep.
Our sleep/wake cycle (circadian rhythm) relies on cues such as daytime activity to regulate sleep and wakefulness. Remaining inactive not only increases fatigue, but it disrupts the body clock and this can make sleep even more difficult.
Although it can be hard, it’s so important to remain active if you want to improve your sleep and improve your quality of life when living with chronic insomnia. You don’t need to start training for a marathon, though — just try to commit to one active pursuit every day (even if it’s nothing more than a walk around the block or meeting friends for lunch).
