There is no evidence that chronic insomnia causes any specific health problem

Insomnia can reduce your quality of life but there is no evidence that it causes any health problem or specific health condition.

The media is full of headlines urging us to get more sleep otherwise we will be at an increased risk of [insert scary health outcome here].

These articles can be very misleading since none of them will refer to a study that found chronic insomnia caused that health problem — because no such studies exist.

Many studies that are referenced by the media take healthy sleepers and intentionally deprive them of sleep for short periods of time and draw inferences from there.

Others take people with other health issues that are more likely to explain the association, while others that involve individuals with chronic insomnia may sometimes find an association — but never a cause.

Association is not causation. There is no evidence that chronic insomnia causes any health problem.

So, I urge you not to spend time worrying about the health effects of insomnia. Instead, I encourage you to exert your efforts into addressing your sleep problems using an effective, evidence-based treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I).
