The problem with supplements for chronic insomnia (and why they aren't a long-term solution)
There is very little evidence to support the effectiveness of any kind of supplement for chronic insomnia — and taking a supplement can actually make insomnia worse rather than better.
Whenever we take a supplement for insomnia, we can easily believe that any sleep we get after taking that supplement came from the supplement rather than our body’s own natural ability to sleep.
This is fine for the short-term, since — after all — you are getting sleep! However, since a supplement cannot address the root cause and perpetuating factors of chronic insomnia, as soon as sleep issues return, it leaves you scrambling for a new supplement and some other new crutch that you think will be able to generate sleep for you. This leads to more worry and anxiety and perpetuates insomnia.

Instead of looking for a new supplement or magic pill for insomnia, I encourage everyone with chronic insomnia to look into cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I).
CBT-I has overwhelming evidence to support its long-term effectiveness and is the gold standard for treating chronic insomnia. CBT-I techniques tackle the root causes of insomnia and prevent sleep-related thoughts and behaviors from feeding your insomnia.
