00:03 One in four Americans will develop insomnia this year. That means dozens of us in this room are sleep deprived, and after last night’s party, I think a lot more of us are probably sleep deprived. So we are experiencing an epidemic in sleeplessness.
00:18 It’s estimated that 50 to 70 million Americans struggle with their sleep, and upwards to 10 to 30% of the global population. To put that in perspective, that is 800 million to 2.4 billion people struggling with their sleep.
00:43 Sleep is as essential to a human as sunlight and water are to a plant, which is why we spend about a third of our entire lives doing it. It’s a critical time for our mind and body to heal, repair, and recover. It’s one of the few things in life where doing nothing actually accomplishes something.
01:01 After working with thousands of people over the last 6 years with chronic insomnia, I literally thought I had heard it all until a man, let’s call him John, told me his story about his experience with Ambien, one of the most popular and prescribed sleeping medications on the market.
(01:25) John took his Ambien one night and woke up in jail with no recollection of what had happened. He had gotten into his car, drove down the street, was stopped at a stoplight, found by the police butt naked. His eyes were open, but John was asleep. He was arrested for being under the influence and spent the night in jail with no recollection of this entire experience.
02:01 Medication is a Band-Aid. There’s a time and place for it, but it doesn’t address the underlying root causes. So let me share with you, after working with thousands of people, some often overlooked key things to restoring sleep naturally.
(02:20) The first shift is probably the most important: sleep is not something that can be forced or controlled. Trying to control something that we have no control of creates just subtle form of pressure, and this pressure is enough to keep us up.
(02:58) The second shift is that insomnia is actually a 24-hour disorder, it is not a bedtime disorder. Viewing insomnia as a bedtime disorder puts us in a problem-solving mindset, and when we’re in a problem-solving mindset, we view sleep as a problem, and sleep is not the problem. Sleep is a result.
(03:30) The third shift is if you have struggles with your sleep, you actually want to spend less time in bed, not more. Spending more time in bed actually anchors the bed and bedroom with wakefulness.
