Sleep rituals are rarely a good idea — especially if you live with chronic insomnia

Many people with chronic insomnia have a lengthy sleep routine that may start very early in the day. All these rituals are intended to improve sleep — but the more rituals we employ in an attempt to help us sleep, the more likely we are to struggle with sleep.

Sleep cannot be controlled. Good sleepers don’t think about sleep. They don’t follow any sleep rituals, and they sleep well. This is evidence that sleep rituals are not an effective strategy for improving sleep.

Learning that we can’t control sleep and that it’s essential to avoid trying to control or force sleep is a key component of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I).
