Sleep hygiene is not an effective treatment for chronic insomnia

Sleep hygiene is often the first thing people with insomnia are told about. Unfortunately, sleep hygiene doesn’t address the root cause of chronic insomnia, and so it isn’t an effective treatment for chronic insomnia!

Unfortunately, sleep hygiene is often confused with cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) — a collection of techniques that are proven to be an effective long-term treatment for chronic insomnia!

If you’ve followed all the sleep hygiene advice and you are still struggling with insomnia, please look into CBT-I. CBT-I is not the same thing as sleep hygiene. CBT-I is the best treatment for insomnia and is recommended as the first-line treatment for all adults with chronic insomnia by a number of organizations including the American College of Physicians.
