Breaking the Sleep Prop Cycle (Newborns 0–3 Months | Day 2)
Welcome to Day 2! Today, Dana Obleman explains why now is the perfect time to start gently helping your baby develop independent sleep skills—even if they’re still waking frequently to feed.
You’ll learn:
– Why sleep props (like feeding or rocking to sleep) can become sleep crutches
– How these habits lead to frequent night waking and disrupted sleep
– Why it’s important to start letting baby explore their own sleep strategies—even in small ways
How to try short practice sessions during the day to begin building independence
Common sleep props include:
– Feeding (breast or bottle)
– Rocking
– Sleeping on a parent
– Motion (swings, car seats, strollers)
– Pacifiers (more on that later!)
– Music, patting, singing, laying beside your baby, and more
💤 Even if you’re still rocking or feeding to sleep most of the time, small changes now can lead to big improvements later.
