If insomnia doesn't cause any health problems why do you feel aches and pains after a bad night?
Chronic insomnia doesn’t cause any health problem — but many people with insomnia feel that a lack of sleep leads to a host of acute health issues such as headaches and muscle pain.
The fact of the matter is, these issues are unlikely to be caused by a lack of sleep. When we live with chronic insomnia we tend to be hypervigilant to any effect of poor sleep. In other words, we constantly scan our bodies to look for the consequences of a bad night of sleep.
Sometimes, this uncovers aches and pains that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.
Another explanation for these aches and pains is that when we have insomnia, we tend to associate every negative thing with poor sleep. For example, if we have a hard day we can easily blame the previous night of bad sleep on everything bad that happened during the day.
Similarly, if we have a horrible headache or some bad back pain, we can easily blame our insomnia for these problems.
Taking time to examine the accuracy of these thoughts can be helpful, as can implementing cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) techniques since they can help reduce the amount of time we spend worrying and thinking about sleep and looking for physical symptoms of our insomnia.
