What to do when you still have some bad nights of sleep during/after a course of CBT for insomnia
When implementing CBT for insomnia (CBT-I) techniques, some people notice that although their sleep improves on the majority of nights, one or two nights of poor sleep continue to occur quite predictably each week and prove hard to resolve.
This is actually quite common. When I work with clients I often see them experience significant improvements in their sleep but one or two nights appear to resist the techniques that are being implemented. This can be frustrating and make you believe that CBT-I isn’t working.
The truth is, if you are seeing improvements on other nights of the week, then the CBT-I techniques are working. Quite often, there are one or two “holdout” nights that take a bit longer to get rid of — but, as long as you continue to implement CBT-I techniques consistently and don’t experiment with different techniques or strategies on these “holdout” nights, they will become less frequent.
Remember that a bad night of sleep affects everyone and can occur at any time. These nights can also occur without any apparent cause or explanation. Don’t dwell on the bad nights. Instead, focus your attention on the good nights. Stay strong, stay committed, and your sleep will continue to improve.
