Constant change and endless sleep experiments are mentally exhausting and make sleep more difficult

When you’re struggling with chronic insomnia, it’s completely normal and natural that you want to try new routines or implement new sleep rituals in an attempt to improve your sleep. Unfortunately, just as it’s a bad idea to compensate for a bad night of sleep, it’s not helpful to be constantly changing your sleep routine or your sleep environment.

Sleep craves predictability. It loves a routine. Every time you make a change to your routine or environment, your sleep needs time to adjust. If you make another change before you are used to the previous change, your sleep will be in a constant state of uncertainty.

There’s nothing wrong with making some changes to improve your sleep — the best long-term treatment for chronic insomnia, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), requires you to make changes. However, it is important that any changes you make are constructive and that you give these changes time to work before moving on to the next experiment.
