Falling asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow and not waking during the night isn’t normal!

Many people with chronic insomnia worry that if they don’t fall asleep as soon as they get into bed, it’s going to be “one of those nights”. Additionally, many people with insomnia worry that they will wake during the night and consider this to be a primary symptom of their insomnia.

The fact is, most people do not fall asleep as soon as they get into bed — and it is completely normal to wake during the night (more on that in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=329oFzXmwEM).

On average, a typical sleeper will fall asleep within around 10 to 30 minutes after getting into bed. So, if you get into bed and start to worry that you haven’t fallen asleep within 20 minutes or so, it can be helpful to recognize that this is quite normal.

When it comes to nighttime awakenings, a typical sleeper can expect to wake around 10 to 15 times during the night. These awakenings are generally short (under a minute) and are completely normal. Good sleepers don’t worry about these awakenings so they will typically fall back to sleep quickly and they are unlikely to remember them.

Waking during the night only becomes a problem when we worry about the awakening — because this activates the arousal system and makes it difficult to fall back to sleep.

The only time you should have any concern about waking during the night is if the awakenings happen very frequently, you have been told that you snore very loudly, you wake with a gasp or choking sound, or you wake in the morning with a dry mouth and headache since these are symptoms associated with sleep apnea. If you recognize any of these symptoms, you should speak with your doctor.
