How to reduce sleep disruption when traveling with chronic insomnia
A lot of people with chronic insomnia worry about traveling because of the effect it can have on sleep. The fact is, it’s completely normal for sleep to be disrupted when we travel due to the environmental changes that occur and the temporary circadian rhythm disruption commonly referred to as jet lag that happens when we travel across time zones.
It’s often a good idea to expect sleep to be disrupted when you travel — it would actually be quite unusual for you to cross time zones and/or sleep in a different environment and sleep normally! As long as you don’t try to compensate for this sleep disruption, your sleep will get back on track by itself.

To help minimize disruption when crossing time zones it can be helpful to follow these guidelines:
If you land at your destination during the day, try to stay awake and active until your normal bedtime, then go to bed if you feel sleepy — but set an alarm to wake you at your normal out of bed time.
If you land at your destination at night (after your normal bedtime) then go straight to bed as soon as you feel sleepy enough for sleep — but, again, set an alarm to wake you at your normal out of bed time.

Perhaps most importantly of all, try to have fun! The more fun you have, the more you starve your insomnia of the attention it craves.
