How to deal with sleep anxiety when you try to sleep in your own bed
Meghan asked a great question on the Insomnia Coach Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/insomniacoach). She struggles to sleep in her own bed because of high levels of sleep anxiety. So, since Christmas, she has been sleeping in her La-Z-Boy since she doesn’t experience any sleep anxiety there.
Meghan wanted to know how to deal with the sleep anxiety that occurs when she tries to sleep in her own bed.
First of all, it’s important to bear in mind that it’s completely normal to experience sleep anxiety when we are repeatedly exposed to negative experiences in our own bed, night after night.
However, just as we have learned to see the bed as a place of stress and worry, we can “relearn” to see the bed as a place of sleep and relaxation.

Ultimately, we do this by making sure that the only place we sleep is our own bed. In other words, we need to avoid sleeping anywhere other than our own bed.

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) techniques can help weaken the arousal system that generates sleep anxiety and build sleep drive, making sleep more likely. As long as we avoid sleeping anywhere other than our own bed and we don’t nap during the day, we will eventually sleep in our own bed because sleep drive will reach a point where it’s impossible to stay awake.

By repeatedly sleeping in our own bed, night after night, we soon learn that the bed is a place for sleep rather than wakefulness. Over time, the bed will (once again) become a strong trigger for sleep and there will be far less (if any) conditioned sleep anxiety.
