Adding more enjoyable moments to your life and planning fun activities reduces the power of insomnia
Many, if not most, people with chronic insomnia modify their lives in some way in response to poor sleep. This could be things like canceling plans with friends or calling in sick to work. It can also include putting off things that would otherwise be exciting, enjoyable, and enriching — a vacation, for example.
Unfortunately, all these compensatory behaviors only guarantee one thing — that our insomnia will lead to a bad day and have a very negative impact on our lives.

Every time we choose to allow insomnia to reduce our quality of life, we worry more about sleep and we put more pressure on ourselves to sleep. This leads to worse sleep and makes it harder to get rid of insomnia.
Insomnia is definitely not pleasant. It does have a negative impact on our quality of life. However, much of this negative impact is within our control.
If we try to live our lives as though we don’t have insomnia, if we make fun plans, if we stay active, if we add as many positive activities and moments to our day as possible, we allow ourselves to see that the quality of our life is tied to more than just the quality of our sleep.

The more positive moments we can enjoy when living with insomnia, the less time we spend thinking about sleep and worrying about sleep. The more we are able to recognize that we can have a great, good, or OK day (or even just notice a few positive moments) after a bad night (or string of bad nights) the less power insomnia has over us.
If we don’t feed our insomnia, it’s likely to get bored and move on.
