What is the best position for sleep when you have chronic insomnia?

Many people ask me what the best position for sleep is when chronic insomnia is making sleep difficult. The answer is quite simple — the best position for sleep is the position you feel most comfortable in!

The fact of the matter is, sleeping position is not a perpetuating factor that contributes to chronic insomnia. In other words, it really has no effect on how well we sleep over the long-term.

Unless you have been given specific medical advice to sleep in a specific position (or to avoid a specific position), simply adopt whichever position feels most comfortable. Trying to sleep in a certain position can make sleep more difficult as your mind is tasked with continuously monitoring your position — and it’s not constructive since we will typically move at least a dozen times during the night anyway.
