If you have insomnia, what happens tonight is far less important than what you do today and tonight
If you’ve been living with chronic insomnia for a long time, it’s only natural that you might feel worried about what tonight may bring. However, if you are implementing constructive and evidence-based techniques that will improve your sleep for the long term, what happens from night to night doesn’t actually matter all that much.

The thing is, you cannot control how well or how poorly you might sleep tonight — so worrying about this or trying to predict the future isn’t helpful. With that being said, you can control things that will give sleep the best chance possible.
You have control over what to do during your day — if you add enjoyable activities to your day and don’t cancel or modify your day in response to a hard night you will improve the quality of your life and be able to recognize that you have far more control over the quality of your day than sleep does.

You also have control over when you go to bed at night, what you do if you are in bed and finding sleep difficult, and when to get out of bed to start your day in the morning.
If you are observing a regular and appropriate sleep window, getting out of bed when being in bed becomes unpleasant, and getting out of bed by the same time every day you will be building sleep drive, helping to regulate your body clock, and reducing sleep-related worry — all of which can perpetuate insomnia.

Ultimately, your goal is better sleep over the long term. You are on a journey. There will be ups and downs along the way. With this in mind, what happens on any individual night really doesn’t matter. Stay focused on your long term goal and you will reach it!
